Pollinator Garden Main Entrance Founders

New Pollinator Gardens

This summer, the University Libraries decided to remember two dear friends, TJ Lusher and Carla Montgomery, through the creation of pollinator pocket gardens next to the Founders Memorial Library on Normal Road. The gardens are filled with native plants which feed butterflies, bees and other pollinators that are so crucial to our ecosystem. The pockets were inspired by news of DeKalb becoming a certified member of Monarch City USA, an organization which advocates for the creation of monarch butterfly habitats. Given the love that both of our dear friends had of nature, it seemed appropriate to create the gardens in their honor, with the help of the library staff. The pollinator pocket gardens each contain milk-weed, indigo, butterfly bush, yarrow, purple cone flower, salvia, rudbeckia or “brown eyed susans,” garlic chives, catmint and sedum. All plants were sourced from DeKalb County Commu-nity Garden, Blumen Gardens or supplied by a close loved one of those who were being remembered.
